working principle

A dynamically balanced cylindrical rotor with a hollow hub and a series of curved blades is rotated freely in the eccentric casing. The sufficient sealing water / liquid forms a solid ring on the periphery of the casing, due to the centrifugal force, the rotor is rotated in the eccentric casing, the rotating blade creates working spaces whose volume increases as the rotor rotates from lower to upper vertex and decreases as the rotor rotates from upper vertex to lower vertex. The uniform distribution of working spaces on rotor periphery results in continuous suction and exhaust of gases.

Applications of Vacuum Pumps in the Electrical Power Industry

Vacuum Pumps are supportive and important in power generation, as they remove non-condensable gases (nitrogen and hydrogen) from the condenser. This makes the condenser work more effectively in removing spent steam from the discharge of the turbine.

    Condenser Exhausting

Vacuum pumps remove air and non-condensable gases from condensers, helping to maintain low turbine backpressure. This is vital for the efficient operation of thermal and nuclear power plants.

    Geothermal Gas Removal

Vacuum pumps eliminate air and corrosive gases from the steam in geothermal power plants. Removing these gases is essential to protect the system and ensure proper functioning.

    Vacuum Priming

Vacuum pumps maintain siphon action in cooling water systems, ensuring efficient operation of circulating pumps while consuming less power. Liquid ring pumps with priming valves prevent water slugs from entering the system.

    Fly Ash Conveying

Vacuum systems convey fly ash pneumatically from precipitator hoppers to a central collection point. The vacuum ensures air leaks inward, preventing ash from escaping during the process.

    Flue Gas Desulphurization

During the scrubbing of flue gas, vacuum pumps help remove water from the slurry, allowing only solid materials to be processed, which is essential for efficient sulfur removal.

    Turbine Gland Exhausting

Vacuum pumps remove excess steam and condensate from turbine glands, maintaining proper sealing and preventing inward air leakage, which is critical for optimal turbine performance.

What types of vacuum pumps are best for the electrical power industry?

The type of vacuum pump depends on the application. Rotary vane pumps are common for general maintenance and transformer oil dehydration, while dry and scroll pumps are favored for applications needing a contamination-free environment, like switchgear and circuit breaker maintenance.

How do vacuum pumps improve the safety of electrical power systems?

Vacuum pumps help maintain proper insulation levels in power equipment, reduce the risk of arcing in circuit breakers, and aid in leak detection. These functions collectively reduce the risk of electrical faults and enhance operational safety.
